Travel all the time all over the world for my work with growing leaders and and ill never forget just a few years ago being in california. I was on a number of road systems. There that week and i without warning at least.
I didnt see any signs found myself at a toll booth along this freeway. I wasnt ready for this thing in fact i was in a rental car so i was checking my wallet. I didnt have a dollar.
It was gonna cost me a dollar to get going i started reaching into the crevices of the seats trying to hope that some renter had left nickels and quarters and dimes. But there was nothing there so i started negotiating. Im such an idiot.
I started negotiating at the the toll booth with this person theyre trying to tell them that i had a number of credit card options that i could use. But alas this person wanted cash they wanted a dollar bill hand it to them and they would not let me through until. I paid the toll well at this point.
Theres a line of cars behind me. Im sure theyre getting ready to honk their horn. And i finally had to get out of my car.
I felt so embarrassed and i had to go to the guy behind me. And say is there any way youve got an extra dollar because i dont have any money on me. I have learned since that time to carry cash along with me.
But my point was this at that point when i finally paid the toll. I had not only stopped my own progress. Id stopped the progress of so many around me and here is a picture.
I believe of what happens with generation iy. Very very often at the risk of sounding. Very pithy and cliche.
I believe that adolescence is a little bit like a toll booth. Where you have to stop to go through. And you have to pay a price and far too many not all certainly.
But far too. Many young adults arent willing were ready to pay that price to get through adolescence and they get stuck the toll. Booth becomes a roadblock they get stuck in adolescence well into their 20s you may be youve heard me mention this before.
But i have lost count of the number of university deans that have said to me. 26 is the new 18. I mean were still continuing into adolescence for now a 15 to 20 year span.
And it didnt used to be this way. I mean if you studied the term adolescence. Its not that old its a term thats about a hundred years old and prior to that time before we explained away lack of maturation you were either a boy or a young man you were a girl or a young woman and now weve almost given permission to ourselves to remain in mature and unready for the adult world that awaits that awaits them ill never forget leading a focus group of young high school students and one particular girl came up to me after the focus group was officially over by the way those are when the best conversations happen and kind of off the record.
She said. Dr.
Tim. I think i know why so many of us are getting stuck and in her own words. This is what she said.
She said the adult world that youre calling us into has never been more complex and shes right. Its a very complex world that were living in today. But then she added the adolescent world has never been more pleasurable and she basically said why would i want to leave this world had come into that world and then she added so many of you guys are actually trying to be like us you know wearing skinny jeans and getting tattoos and getting something pierced and it just went on and on or not and i suddenly realized perhaps for many of them.
The reason theyre not becoming better adults is theyve not seen enough great healthy well adjusted role models as adults to follow im just saying im not saying so in one particular chapter of this new generation. I why book i really challenge the reader you to walk through the process of answering the question. Why are the young people around me getting stuck in adolescence.
Why are they not progressing through that tollbooth paying the price and making progress. Let me just offer something thats only in the new book. Its not in the old generous night web book.
But it may be a bit of a diagram for you in your mind to explain and maybe even talk over with a young person in your life. I call it the generation iy scene. And what ive simply done is is created two columns in the book.
Im going to try to describe them to you here. But on the left hand column. I simply write out the words.
See s. See e. And e.
Because. I think. Those.
Five letters. Aptly described five words that define the world that theyve grown up in. But then in the right hand column.
I actually provide the unintended consequences of this scenario that may explain why these kids are not maturing. Because of the culture around them i dont think its their fault. They i think theyre victims of the culture that theyre living in so lets walk through this very rapidly.
The letter s in the word scene reminds me that their world is full of speed in fact. Our world is full of speed. We love high speed internet access and nothing less we call it instagram not just graham.
But instagram atms fast food everythings fast. But watch this if i grow up in a world of speed and thats all ive ever known i can assume that slow is bad. I cant even navigate things that are too slow the letter c.
And scene reminds me their world is full of convenience. I think we all love the modern day conveniences we enjoy.
But if i grow up in a world of convenience. I can assume that hard is bad. And i think they do the number one phrase that k.
12. Educators. Say they hear from students today.
Is this is too hard. The letter e and scene reminds me their world is full of entertainment and now its in our hands. Its a smart phone in fact if we have five minutes to wait in line.
Were probably pulling out that that portable device and getting some stimulation from espn or emails or whatever. But watch this if i grew up in a world of entertainment. I can easily assume that boring is bad.
I cant even navigate it the letter. N. Reminds me their world is full of nurture.
Now certainly not all of them. Some of them grown up have grown up in a very difficult home life. But for middle class americans.
We have nurtured these kids. Some believe weve coddled them too much they grew up entitled to whatever if i grew up in a world or nurture. I can easily assume that risk is bad.
I dont want to take any risks and so this generation of college students wants to be entrepreneurs. But they dont want to fail. And im thinking most entrepreneurial efforts end up in failure.
Once or twice. And then finally the last letter e. In the word scene reminds me theyve grown up in a world of entitlement.
I deserve this just because im here i deserve a ribbon or a trophy just for putting my fork in the dishwasher. But and and so if i grow up in a world of entitlement. I can easily assume that labor is bad and again we constantly hear employers of these young recent graduates telling us that the kids are saying in the job interview.
This job is beneath me. I i think i should have something bigger than this or that pays more and again maybe they should. But my point ensuring.
This is simply this this world of speed and convenience has created a world that while we love it does not naturally build the life skills in us that we need to be mature adults. So were going to need to be more intentional and thats the point. We need to be more intentional and in this chapter.
I lay out some intentional steps that we can lead them through a world of speed and convenience to become the great well adjusted adults. They need to be and im thinking this chapter is going to be a very practical one for you as you go through it yourself. .
